What Is GIS Day?

GIS Day is a global event for thousands of users of GIS technology to educate millions of children and adults about how geography makes a difference in our lives through the technology of GIS and to demonstrate GIS technology at schools, universities, and organizations around the world.

A GIS, or geographic information system, represents computer software, data, and solutions that are used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business. Learn more! GIS has been extensively used in all of the recent Natural Hazards to isolate problem areas, support needy people, plan and implement mitigation, and make it all go efficiently.

GIS can be used by virtually any one in any discipline that has got "spatial" component (history, political science, biology, ees, language, medicine, business, library.... you name it!). Take this opportunity to see how YOU can benefit from GIS. Check out who does what GIS at Furman and ask them questions. Get to know GIS.

Worldwide, GIS Day is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, UCGIS (University Consortium of Geographic Information Science), United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, and ESRI.

GIS Day 2005 will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2005, during Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 14-18) . In addition to events such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week, there will also be many worldwide activities supporting geography action, with their goal being to engage people in learning and caring about geography.
